PM Narendra Modi speech LIVE updates: Let's save ourselves from lockdown
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is addressing the nation on the prevailing Covid-19 situation in the country. This comes soon after PM Modi interacted with top vaccine manufacturers in the country. In the meeting, the prime minister urged the vaccine manufacturers to continuously scale up their production capacity so that all Indians could be vaccinated against Covid-19 at the earliest.
PM Narendra Modi's address to the nation on Covid-19 comes at a time when India is seeing an exponential spike in its Covid-19 cases, while deaths too are increasing.
For several days now, India has been recording more than 2 lakh fresh coronavirus cases every day. The active case tally has crossed the 16 lakh mark and several states have reported a shortage of ICU beds, ventilators, and medical oxygen to treat Covid-19 patients.

9.02 pm: PM Modi said, "In today's situation, we have to save the country from lockdown. I appeal to the states that they should use lockdown as the last option. Try as much as possible to protect yourselves from lockdown. Focus on micro-containment zones."
9.00 pm: "I appeal to the people to come forward and help the needy to overcome this battle against Covid-19. I appeal to the youth to make small committees in their localities to spread awareness about Covid-appropriate behavior," PM Modi said.
9.00 pm: The situation that was in 2020 was very different from the present situation. Back then we did not have any Covid-19 specific treatment or medicines. Testing capacity was limited. But we have come a long way from that in a very short time, he said.
8.58pm: "I appeal to the state governments that they take the migrant workers in confidence and urge them to stay where they are and not return home. The assurance from the states that they will soon be vaccinated wherever they are currently will help them a lot," PM Modi said.
8.57 pm: "Yesterday, we took an important decision regarding vaccination. From May 1, all adults aged more than 19 years will be eligible to get Covid-19 vaccines in India."
8.55 pm: PM Modi said it is the result of team effort that today we have two Made in India vaccines against Covid-19 and India was able to start the world's largest vaccination drive.
8.52 pm: Speaking on the issue of shortage of medical oxygen, PM Modi said during the pandemic, the demand for medical oxygen has risen in several parts of the country.
We are working on this speedily. The Centre, the state governments, and the private sector, all are committed to ensuring that every needy person gets oxygen in time."
Efforts are being made at various levels to enhance oxygen production and its supply, he said.
8. 55pm: We are fortunate that we have a very strong pharma sector that makes quality medicines speedily. The government is also making efforts to increase bed capacity in hospitals too.
8.49 pm: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the decisions that have been taken in the past few days will help "improve the situation speedily".
8.48 pm: In his address to the nation, PM Modi also thanked all doctors, medical staff, paramedical staff, ambulance drivers, security forces, and police for their services during the pandemic. "You all have put your lives at stake to save others," he said.
8.47pm: "I express my condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones due to Covid-19. Just like a member of your family, I am with you in this hour of sadness. The battle is long and difficult, but we have to overcome it together with our dedication and courage," PM Modi said.
8.46 pm: PM Modi said he is fully aware of the pain that the people have endured and the pain that they are going through.
8.45 pm: "The country is today fighting a very big battle against Covid-19. The situation had improved for a while, but the second covid-19 wave has come like a storm," PM Modi.
